How We Teach

The science behind the path — and room for your way of walking it

Growth Paths Academy is built on a simple conviction: children learn best when the way a lesson is taught matches the way their minds are growing. A kindergartner and a fifth grader are not small and large versions of the same learner — they think in genuinely different ways. This page explains how we design for that, the research it rests on, and how the courses bend to fit whatever homeschool style suits your family.

How children learn changes with age

The pattern most parents notice on their own is real and well documented: young children learn through their senses, through pictures, and through doing the same thing many times; older children can hold ideas in their heads, reason about things they can’t see, and take on longer, multi-step challenges. Our courses shift deliberately across four age bands so the teaching always meets the child where they are.

Kindergarten — Trailhead

How they think: concrete and sensory. Learning happens through seeing, touching, moving, and hearing a thing named again and again.

How we teach it: lots of pictures and simple diagrams, short lessons, warm repetition, and one small idea at a time. A friendly guide (each grade has a mascot) narrates in a gentle voice so the child hears the concept as much as reads it.

Grades 1–2 — Foothills

How they think: still concrete, but now able to connect a picture to a symbol — three apples to the numeral 3, a sound to a letter.

How we teach it: we start with the picture, then fade to the symbol (“concreteness fading”). Worked examples model the thinking step by step, and short daily practice builds the habit of retrieving what was learned.

Grades 3–4 — Ridgeline

How they think: increasingly able to reason about rules, categories, and cause and effect — and to hold a two- or three-step problem in mind.

How we teach it: lessons ask “why,” not just “what.” Multi-step problems, short investigations, and challenge questions stretch the child just past what they can already do on their own.

Grade 5 — Summit

How they think: beginning true abstract reasoning — working with ideas that have no picture, weighing evidence, and juggling several parts of a problem at once.

How we teach it: deeper readings, open-ended challenges, projects that combine subjects, and questions that ask the student to defend an answer — the on-ramp to middle-school thinking.

These bands are guides, not gates. Children develop at their own pace, and you know yours best — every lesson is open to you, so you can move a child up or down a band whenever it fits.

The research we build on

Our design choices aren’t hunches; they come from a century of study in how children learn. We name our sources plainly so you can read them yourself.

Development happens in stages

The idea that thinking matures through broad stages — sensory and concrete in early childhood, gradually abstract by the pre-teen years — comes from developmental psychologist Jean Piaget. It’s why a kindergarten lesson leans on pictures and a fifth-grade lesson can work with pure ideas. Modern research refines Piaget’s timeline (children often reason more capably than he thought, given the right support), which leads directly to the next two points.

Teach just beyond what a child can already do

Psychologist Lev Vygotsky described the Zone of Proximal Development — the sweet spot between what a learner can do alone and what they can do with help. Teaching aimed there, with support that’s gradually removed, produces the most growth. The word for that fading support, “scaffolding,” was coined by Wood, Bruner & Ross (1976). In our courses this is the concept → worked example → guided practice → independent practice arc: help is heavy at first, then lifts away.

Move from the concrete to the abstract

Psychologist Jerome Bruner showed that new ideas land best when they travel from doing (enactive) to picturing (iconic) to symbols (symbolic). Starting with a real, pictured example and only then introducing the symbol — concreteness fading — is why our early grades show three counters before the numeral 3, and a diagram before a definition.

Don’t overload a young mind

John Sweller’s Cognitive Load Theory explains why we keep early lessons short and uncluttered: working memory is small, especially in young children, so we present one idea at a time and lean on clear worked examples instead of long, busy pages. Richard Mayer’s research on multimedia learning adds the rest of the recipe — a relevant picture beside plain words teaches better than words alone, as long as the picture isn’t mere decoration.

Remembering is a skill you build by practicing recall

Two of the most reliable findings in learning science shape our practice questions. Retrieval practice — the act of pulling an answer from memory rather than re-reading it — strengthens learning far more than review does (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006). And the spacing effect, traced back to Hermann Ebbinghaus, shows that the same practice spread over days beats cramming. That’s why every lesson ends with questions to answer from memory, and why the courses are paced day by day rather than all at once.

What kind of teacher are you?

Homeschooling families teach in very different ways, and that’s a strength, not a problem to solve. The printed workbooks already give you total freedom — you can skip around, move back and forth, linger on a hard chapter, or hold a strict daily regimen. The online courses are built to give you exactly that same freedom. Every lesson and chapter opens on demand: nothing is locked behind the last one, so you can follow the day-by-day path or chart your own. Here’s how the common approaches map onto the courses.

Charlotte Mason

Short, focused lessons; living ideas over dry facts; narration (having the child tell back what they learned). Our lessons are deliberately short and end with tell-back and open-ended prompts — use the narration questions and keep sessions brief, as Mason advised.

Classical (the Trivium)

The grammar–logic–rhetoric stages of Dorothy Sayers and Susan Wise Bauer. K–5 sits mostly in the “grammar” stage — facts, memory, and repetition — which our repetition and retrieval practice serve directly, while the “why” questions in grades 3–5 begin the logic stage.

Montessori

Child-led pace, hands-on materials, mastery before moving on. Because every lesson is open and progress is the child’s own, a student can work at their own speed and stay on a concept until it’s solid — pair the screen lessons with real-world materials.

Traditional / Textbook

A clear scope and sequence, taught in order, with regular checks. Follow the day-by-day path straight through; the chapter and final exams give you the graded checkpoints and the printable report card for your records.

Unit Studies

One theme explored across many subjects at once. Because you can open any subject’s chapters freely, you can pull the geography, science, and art lessons that share a theme and teach them together in a week of your own design.

Unschooling & Eclectic

Interest-led, or a mix of methods chosen lesson by lesson (John Holt’s child-led tradition, and the many families who blend approaches). Nothing here forces an order — dip into whatever a child is curious about today, and use as much or as little of the structure as suits you.

So should your style change how you use the courses?

Yes — and the courses are designed to let it. If you hold a strong regimen, follow the daily path and lean on the reports and exams as your checkpoints. If you teach by interest or theme, open lessons in any order and treat the sequence as a menu, not a track. If you follow a mastery approach, stay on a lesson until it’s solid before moving on. The path is laid out clearly for those who want to follow it step by step, and it opens up completely for those who’d rather wander. Either way, the same care went into how each lesson is built.
